Hari Khamis lepas saya ada berbincang dengan seorang klien mengenai kursus "Bacaan Pantas".  Perbualan dalam perbincangan itu terheret juga mengenai penguasaan bahasa kerana "Bacaan Pantas" memang berkait dengan bahasa.

Apa yang menyentuh perasaan saya ialah bila beliau beritahu, dalam satu jabatan, lebih 90% kakitangannya bukan daripada orang Islam.  Bila ada orang Islam datang temuduga, walaupun memiliki CGPA 3.8, namun selepas 10 saat (ya, 10 saat), dia sudah boleh buat keputusan calon itu tidak layak kerana kekurangan kemampuan berbahasa Inggeris.

Klien saya ini adalah regional player, dengan jumlah kakitangan mencapai sekitar 800 orang.  Jika keadaan ini berterusan, siapa harus dipersalahkan bila jabatan lain dalam organisassi itu juga nanti memerlukan kakitangan yang fasih berbahasa Inggeris?  Siapa yang akan rugi?

Seingat saya, penurunan penguasaan Bahasa Inggeris di Malaysia bermula dengan batch SPM 1978, bila semua subjek diajar adalah dalam Bahasa Melayu sejak tahun 1974.  Ini bererti, Malaysia mengalami penurunan kualiti Bahasa Inggeris bermula daripada mereka yang sudah berumur 49 tahun.  Golongan ini telah mula menjadi tenaga kerja secara umumnya pada tahun 1984.  Jika mereka daripada kalangan guru, mereka mula mengajar pada tahun 1984/5, sehingga tahun 2003 sewaktu PPSMI diperkenalkan, mereka ini sudah mengajar selama hampir 20 tahun, dan mereka mengajar dalam Bahasa Melayu.  Hitungannya, golongan ini telah melahirkan satu generasi yang belajar dalam Bahasa Melayu sepenuhnya. Dan sudah ramai anak murid mereka juga yang kini sudahpun memasuki alam pekerjaan.  Daripada kiraan umur tenaga kerja, jika dikira pencen pada umur 58 tahun, dan tempoh kerja adalah 33 tahun, ia boleh dianggarkan hampir dua pertiga daripada para guru hari ini merupakan mereka yang belajar dalam Bahasa Melayu sepenuhnya.  Mereka ini perlu mengikuti latihan untuk mengajar dalam Bahasa Inggeris, satu kerja yang ramai tidak menyukainya.  Bukan kerana susah, tetapi lebih kerana tidak mahu belajar semula.  Patutlah, begitu ramai guru yang menentang PPSMI!  Bayangkan, betapa rendahnya kemampuan rakyat Malaysia berbahasa Inggeris sekarang ini.

Klien saya itu juga ada memberitahu, international and regional players melihat kepada India, kerana mereka bersungguh dalam memastikan rakyat mereka belajar bahasa komunikasi antarabangsa itu.  Bila ini berlaku, sumber manusia kita, terutama orang Islam yang begitu bersungguh memastikan kumpulan mereka tidak fasih berbahasa Inggeris, amat rendah nilainya dalam permintaan pekerjaan.  Bila tidak diterima bekerja, bagaimana akan berlaku perpindahan ilmu, maklumat dan teknologi?  Bila tidak diterima bekerja, bagaimana dengan standard of living?  Bila tidak ramai orang Islam dalam pekerjaan dengan international and regional players, bagaimana pula dengan perniagaan yang berkaitan dengan mereka, seperti membekal barangan keperluan syarikat-syarikat itu?  Siapa agaknya yang akan mudah mendapat peluang membekal kalau tidak mereka yang mudah dikenali oleh pekerja-pekerja dalam syarikat-syarikat berkenaan? 

Banyak lagi soalan-soalan yang menerjah minda saya untuk ditulis, tetapi jika dua tiga soalan yang saya kemukakan itu suda tidak boleh dijawab dengan puas hati, orang Islam perlu bertindak sekarang.  Jangan tunggu kesan pembatalan PPSMI menjadikan umat Islam seperti zaman tahun 60an, di mana ikan yang ditangkap dengan menggadai nyawa di tengah laut cuma mampu ditolak hutang beras musim tengkujuh.  Bukan kerana mereka tidak bekerja keras, tetapi kerana mereka tidak menguasai pasaran di kampung mereka sendiri.  Siapa yang menguasai pasaran jika tidak mereka yang berniaga?  Bayangkanlah bila organisasi perniagaan dikuasai oleh mereka yang fasih berbahasa Inggeris kerana keadaan globalisassi dunia sekarang ini.

Saya tidak dapat bayangkan selain daripada mimpi ngeri orang Islam akan mampu menjadi hamba di lubuk emas dalam kawasan tanah yang mereka miliki sendiri. 

Saya ingin rekodkan kekesalan saya kepada tindakan GAPENA dan parti politik PAS, serta beberapa organisasi berasaskan orang Islam lain yang bersekongkol dengan mereka.  Tidak akan saya kecualikan para guru yang malas belajar Bahasa Inggeris kerana sudah lama senang dengan mengajar dalam Bahasa Melayu, dan mengorbankan kepentingan keturunan mereka sendiri kerana kemalasan itu. Sekurang-kurangnya saya boleh beritahu cucu saya nanti, inilah golongan yang bersalah jika mereka susah mendapatkan pekerjaan dan susah untuk hidup di negara mereka sendiri yang begitu kaya dengan hasil anugerah Allah.

Malaysiakini editor-in-chief Steven Gan, in a statement on the website, said both videos are news events which are of public interest.

“Our intent in putting up the videos was not to ‘annoy’ anyone, but to do our job as journalists to draw attention to the protest and to ensure action is taken so that incidents like this will not happen again in Malaysia,” he said.

Gan added that Malaysiakini had no plans to take down the videos and was seeking legal advice.

“Islam bawah UMNO tidak ke mana dan tidak boleh bawa seseorang itu ke syurga. Berdasar perkara itu, saya percaya penduduk di kawasan Permatang Pasir akan memilih calon Pas sebagai wakil rakyat mereka,” kata Datuk Haji Nik Abdul Aziz kepada pemberita di Institut Kemahiran Belia Negara (IKBN) di Permatang Pasir selepas proses penamaan calon bagi pilihan raya kecil Permatang Pasir, pada 17 Ogos 2009.  Pengundian ialah pada 25 Ogos ini.

 

Penjelasan DNAA seperti yang dipetik drpd Harakah:

 

"Saya biasanya mengunakan perkataan penyokong Umno, saya tidak mengunakan ahli Umno. Penyokong lain, ahli lain.

"Saya tidak pernah menyentuh mengenai ahli-ahli Umno, tetapi saya menyentuh dasar yang dibawa oleh Umno," katanya lagi.

"Mana-mana gerakan orang Islam yang hanya mementingkan Islam sahaja tanpa iman, memang mustahil masuk syurga, itu yang saya sebut, tidak langsung maksudkan anggota parti Umno," tegasnya.

Krisis Politik Perak Ahmad Awang Sangkal Harussani


Maksud Firman Allah SWT:
“Wahai orang-orang yang beriman! Jika datang kepada kamu seorang fasik membawa sesuatu berita, maka selidikilah (untuk menentukan) kebenarannya, supaya kamu tidak menimpakan sesuatu kaum dengan perkara yang tidak diingini - dengan sebab kejahilan kamu (mengenainya) - sehingga menjadikan kamu menyesali apa yang kamu telah lakukan.” (Al Hujuraat- ayat 6)

Mengapa Saya Perlu Menjelaskan
Pada mulanya saya tidak bercadang hendak menyiarkan petikan sebahagian besar artikel yang ditulis oleh Zulkafly Baharuddin, Editor Milenia Muslim (MM), yang tersiar dalam keluaran bulan Ogos ini. Perkara ini saya sebutkan dalam posting terdahulu kerana segala penjelasan saya mengenai krisis politik Perak yang dibangkitkan dalam temubual Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria (TSHZ), Mufti Perak dalam temubualnya dengan saudara Zulkafly akan disiarkan sepenuhnya dalam majalah MM. Akan tetapi setelah mendapati beberapa kesalahan fakta dan beberapa bahagian jawapan/penjelasan saya terhadap pandangan mufti perak tidak disiarkan, maka saya memetik beberapa bahagian penting untuk disiarkan dalam blog ini dengan memberikan jawapan-jawapan sepenuhnya seperti yang dibuat dalam temubual saya dengan editor berkenaan pada 09 Jun 2009 di Pejabat Jamiyah Dakwah Islamiah Selangor, Jalan Rahmat, Kuala Lumpur, di samping membuat pembetulan atas kesalahan-kesalahan fakta yang disiarkan.


Editor MM Mungkir Janji
Sebenarnya pihak MM telah berjanji dengan saya supaya draf tulisan editor MM itu diserah kepada saya untuk disemak bagi mendapat kelulusan saya sebelum dicetak dan setiap penjelasan saya terhadap kenyataan TSHZ hendaklah dimuatkan sepenuhnya dalam artikel berkenaan. Selain itu, gambar kulit majalah MM itu mestilah diletakkan sepenuhnya gambar saya sahaja. Tetapi ternyata pihak MM telah mungkir janji. Saya hanya diberikan draf tulisan editornya setelah majalah tersebut dihantar ke percetakan. Beberapa penjelasan penting tidak dimuatkan dalam artikel tersebut. Gambar kulit pula disiarkan gambar saya bersama Tan Sri Mufti. Setelah berkali-kali saya menghubungi saudara Zulkafly, (editor berkenaan) beliau mengatakan artikel itu tidak boleh dibuat apa-apa pindaan lagi dan bila saya bertegas untuk berjumpa dan berbincang dengan beliau, jawapannya, perbincangan hanya boleh dibuat setelah majalah berkenaan diterbitkan. Terakhir beliau menghantar SMS kepada saya seperti berikut, “Salam. Saudara Zainuddin Ayib cadang selepas MM terbit minggu depan – ZulB”. Pesanan ringkas ini dihantar pada 20 Julai 2009 jam 2.55 petang. (Saya difahamkan saudara Zainuddin Ayib adalah orang yang bertanggungjawab atas penerbitan majalah berkenaan). Namun hingga ke hari ini, saya tidak mendapat sebarang maklumat mengenai pertemuan dan perbincangan yang dijanjikan. Kali terakhir saya menghantar pesanan SMS kepada saudara Zulkafly pada 1 Ogos 2009, jam 5.31 petang.

Berdasarkan kepada tindak tanduk saudara Zulkafly itu, saya dapat membuat kesimpulan bahawa pihak Majalah MM tidak beramanah dan mungkir janji. Bahkan seperti cuba secara sengaja menyembunyikan beberapa fakta yang penting seperti yang saya jelaskan. Dalam hal ini saya ada rakaman video temubual saya dengan editor MM itu untuk rujukan.

Berikut petikan dari jawapan dan penjelasan saya. Dengan memetik semula beberapa soalan yang dibangkitkan dalam artikel “Cerita Harussani Di Sebalik Peristiwa”.


MM (keluaran Mei 2009) menulis mengenai pandangan TSHZ
...UMNO hanya memperoleh 28 kerusi, PAS 6, DAP 18 dan PKR 7 kerusi. Kata Datuk Seri Harussani, Ketua Perhubungan UMNO negeri, Dato’ Seri Diraja Tajol Rosli Mohd Ghazali, memintanya menyampaikan keputusan itu kepada Mursyidul Am PAS Dato’ Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat.

Kerana ingin melihat cadangan itu yang akan membawa kepada pembentukan sebuah kerajaan negeri yang kesemuanya Melayu dan beragama Islam buat pertama kalinya sejak Merdeka, malam itu juga dalam hujan lebat, Dato Seri Harussani membawa amanat itu ke Kota Bharu…

Dato' Seri Harussani berkata, Nik Aziz bersetuju dengan cadangan itu tetapi memberitahu bahawa kuasa pemutus tiada di tangannya. Ia di tangan Presiden parti, katanya.

Dato Seri Abdul Hadi Awang menelefon Dato' Seri Harussani pada jam 10 pagi 9 Mac memberitahu persetujuannya kepada cadangan UMNO Perak itu. Namun, kata Hadi pemutus buka di tangannya tetapi terletak di tangan Pesuruhjaya Pas Perak, Ustaz Ahmad Awang.

Sekembalinya ke Ipoh, Dato' Seri Harussani menemui Ustaz Ahmad Awang. Ustaz Ahmad berkata beliau tidak akan mahu bekerjasama dengan mereka yang zalim. Bagaimana beliau menganggap sedemikian walhal mereka yang beliau tuduh zalim itu adalah orang Melayu dan beragama Islam tetapi Ustaz Ahmad lebih bekerjasama dengan orang kafir. Hasil dari keengganan Ustaz Ahmad adalah senario politik di Perak hari ini.


MM (keluaran Ogos 2009) menulis mengenai pandangan Ahmad Awang
… Ustaz Ahmad Awang selaku Pesuruhjaya PAS Perak ketika itu, menyangkal dakwaan Tan Sri Dato’ Seri (Dr) Harussani Zakaria, Mufti Kerajaan Negeri Perak yang mempersalahkannya dengan keengganan menerima tawaran UMNO Perak untuk membentuk kera¬jaan sehingga membawa kepada krisis keabsahan kerajaan negeri di Mahkamah Persekutuan. Beliau tampil dengan sang¬gahan balas bagi menjernih kekerohan salah tafsir mengenai peranannya di seba¬lik tabir krisis tersebut dan pendirian PAS Perak sejak awal 8 Mac 2008.

“Ia seolah semuanya berpunca dari saya. Membaca kenyataan beliau men¬unjukkan bahawa sahabat saya ini, Tan Sri Mufti adalah seorang yang mencam¬puri politik kepartian. Tiada lagi atas sifat non-partisan. Terang-terangan menye¬belahi UMNO. Sebagai seorang mufti yang diberi perkenan oleh sultan sepat¬utnya tidak boleh terlibat dengan politik. Malah secara peribadi beliau selalu meng¬ingatkan masyarakat Islam di Perak agar meninggalkan baju politik dan sangkut di luar pagar masjid.
“Maka analoginya juga pada hari ini, tidak sepatutnya mufti mencampuri uru¬san hal politik sungguhpun bekas Menteri Besar (MB) meminta beliau berjumpa Dato’ Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat. Jika beliau berhujah atas kepentingan Melayu Islam, itu masih dalam konteks politik. Sepatutnya jika beliau mahu campur tan¬gan, dia hanya perlu aturkan perjumpaan antara pimpinan UMNO yang diketuai Dato’ Seri Diraja Mohammad Tajul Rosli dengan kami pimpinan PAS. Setakat itu boleh dilihat yang beliau bersifat adil.

“Justeru itu, saya mahu menjawab “Cerita Harussani Di Sebalik Peristiwa” kerana saya tida k mahu fitnah ke atas diri saya sehingga sampai satu tahap di dalam kursus Biro Tatanegara (BTN) saya dituduh sebagai pengkhianat bangsa dan agama kerana menolak tawaran un¬tuk berpakat sesama Melayu Islam untuk membentuk kerajaan negeri.


MM: Boleh ustaz jelaskan siapakah sebenarnya punca Krisis Politik Perak hari ini kalau bukan ianya berpunca daripada ustaz seperti yang dikatakan oleh Tan Sri Harussani?

AA: Sebenarnya punca krisis politik Perak ini segala-galanya bermula dari UMNO Perak yang tidak bersedia menerima kekalahan mereka dalam PRU ke-12 pada Mac 2008. Sejak dari keputusan diumumkan oleh SPR yang menunjukkan UMNO/BN Perak hanya memenangi 28 kerusi dari 59 kerusi DUN Perak, mereka terus merancang untuk menggagalkan penubuhan kerajaan Perak dari pakatan parti-parti pembangkang PAS/PKR/DAP. Pada malam keputusan tersebut diumumkan UMNO telah menghubungi beberapa ADUN PAS untuk melompat parti dengan tawaran RM berjuta. Orang yang pertama mendapat tawaran itu ialah Ir. Hj.Nizar Jamaluddin, ADUN Pasir Panjang (kini Dato' Seri). Setelah saya selaku Pesuruhjaya PAS Perak mengumumkan persetujuan PAS untuk bersama DAP dan PKR membentuk kerajaan di Perak, tidak berhenti-henti saya dihubungi oleh beberapa orang yang mewakili UMNO, diantaranya beberapa orang pegawai kerajaan. Bahkan saya ditemui oleh beberapa orang pemimpin PEKIDA yang saya percaya mereka mewakili UMNO. Saya mendapat maklumat pihak UMNO cuba mempengaruhi istana untuk membentuk kerajaan minoriti dengan 28 ADUN kerana parti-parti lain memperolehi bilangan kerusi yang lebih kecil dari UMNO/BN. Akan tetapi kami berjaya memintas dengan membuat keputusan menubuhkan gabungan 3 parti yang kemudian dikenali dengan Kerajaan Pakatan Rakyat. UMNO terus mencuba memujuk kami memujuk PAS dengan menghantar Dato' Zahid Hamidi untuk berbincang dengan saya, tetapi saya enggan berjumpa beliau. Beliau dan beberapa orang rakannya termasuk Dato' Amin Salleh, Ketua Jabatan Hal Ehwal Khas Kementerian Penerangan gagal berjumpa saya kerana rumah kediaman saya di Simpang Empat Semanggol dikawal ketat oleh Unit Amal dengan dibantu oleh beberapa orang polis. Kejadian itu berlaku pada malam 16 Mac 2008, sehari sebelum majlis upacara mengangkat sumpah Hj. Nizar sebagai Menteri Besar Perak yang ke-10.

Semenjak keabsahan penubuhan kerajaan Pakatan Rakyat negeri Perak, UMNO Perak di bawah pimpinan Tajol Rosli menetapkan beberapa tarikh tumbangnya kerajaan Pakatan Rakyat. Apabila tarikh 31 Ogos 2009 yang diletakkan sebagai sasaran terakhir gagal dicapai oleh UMNO maka Tajol Rosli meletakkan jawatannya sebagai Pengerusi Perhubungan UMNO Perak. Lalu Dato' Seri Najib mengambil alih jawatan tersebut dan bermulalah episod rampasan kuasa di Perak yang menumbangkan kerajaan Pakatan Rakyat di Perak dengan cara yang begitu gelojoh dan tidak demokratik seperti yang pernah disebut sendiri oleh Tun Dr Mahathir. Bermula dari situ berlakulah suasana huru hara krisis politik Perak. Saya percaya semua perkara ini dapat disaksikan oleh Tan Sri Dato' Mufti Perak (penjelasan ini tidak disiar oleh MM).


MM: Apa penjelasan ustaz mengenai kenyataan TSHZ tentang ramainya orang melayu mengkritik sultan dalam kemelut politik di Perak dan ada antara mereka yang enggan mendoakan sultan dalam khutbah Jumaat?

AA: Dari kenyataan beliau itu, saya melihat ianya seolah-olah ditujukan kepada orang melayu dalam Pakatan Rakyat samada dari kalangan ahli-ahli PAS atau PKR. Kepada saya ia hanya merupakan tuduhan secara rambang kerana jika benar ada di antara mereka yang tidak mendoakan sultan dalam khutbah, perkara itu boleh diambil tindakan oleh pihak berkenaan. Tapi ia tidak pernah dibuktikan dan apa yang saya ketahui sepanjang saya menerajui pimpinan PAS di Perak selama 8 tahun, belum ada seorang pun khatib atau imam dari kalangan ahli/penyokong PAS yang pernah diambil tindakan kerana tidak mendoakan sultan dalam khutbah Jumaat.

Mengenai dakwaan TSHZ bahawa beliau tidak pernah masuk BN atau menyokong BN, tidak perlulah beliau berdalih bahawa beliau “terperangkap” dengan soalan wartawan di hadapan Menteri Penerangan kerana rakyat mengetahui bahawa beliau sendiri bersusah payah pada waktu malam hari bertolak ke Kota Bharu menemui Tok Guru Nik Aziz kerana memenuhi permintaan Dato' Seri Diraja Tajol Rosli, Ketua Perhubungan UMNO Perak masa itu untuk mengajak PAS menyertai BN. Seperti saya katakan, itu sudah terang-terang berpolitik bersama dengan UMNO/BN. Lagipun kalau bercakap supaya menyeru rakyat menyatakan kesetiaan kepada sultan, maka sepatutnya ketika pihak UMNO/BN berusaha hendak menumbangkan kerajaan PR yang diperkenankan penubuhannya oleh Duli Tuanku Sultan, sepatutnya TSHZ bersuara mengingatkan orang UMNO supaya tidak menderhaka kepada sultan. Apatah lagi kesemua ADUN Pakatan Rakyat seramai 31 orang telah berikrar secara bertulis, masing-masing bersetuju dengan pembentukan kerajaan Pakatan Rakyat dan perlantikan Dato' Seri Hj. Nizar Jamaluddin sebagai Menteri Besar Perak yang ke-10. Ikrar bersurat itu dibuat atas titah Seri Paduka Tuanku Sultan. Sepatutnya TSHZ menasihati ketiga-tiga ADUN Pakatan yang keluar parti masing-masing, lalu menyatakan sokongan kepada UMNO/BN itu supaya tidak berbuat demikian kerana mereka boleh dianggap menderhaka kepada Tuanku Sultan sebab memungkiri ikrar masing-masing terhadap sultan. (penjelasan ini tidak disiar oleh MM).


MM: TSHZ berkata “Ini bukan kerja saya. Saya tiada kena mengena dengan politik. Kalau saya ketuk pintu istana, walaupun sultan bagi saya masuk, nanti sultan tanya apa hal? Awak masuk parti mana? Saya nak kata apa?”, demikian kata beliau ketika pihak PAS datang ke rumah beliau pada jam 11 malam meminta jasa baik beliau memohon Paduka Sultan supaya membubarkan kerajaan dan membuat Pilihanraya Negeri.

AA: Saya suka menegaskan bahawa apa yang TSHZ kata itu adalah tidak benar sama sekali kerana apa yang kami sampaikan kepada beliau pada malam itu (3 Febuari 2009) ialah permintaan isteri Dato' Nasarudin Hashim ADUN Bota yang diambil dari rumahnya oleh sekumpulan tertentu dan membawanya ke Putrajaya. Isteri beliau meminta kami berikhtiar membolehkan dia mengadap Raja Muda bagi menceritakan apa yang sebenar terjadi terhadap suaminya yang konon telah berpaling tadah semula kepada UMNO dan menyokong penubuhan kerajaan BN di Perak. Isteri beliau memberitahu pihak kami kumpulan yang datang dengan sebuah kereta mengatakan bahawa Tuanku Raja Muda meminta Dato' Nasarudin mengadap baginda, tiba-tiba suaminya berada di Putrajaya. Hasrat itulah yang kami sampaikan kepada TSHZ. Tidak timbul langsung meminta beliau berjumpa sultan mohon bubar DUN. Saya mengetuai rombongan bertemu beliau malam itu. Yang lain-lain ialah Dr. Khairuddin Dato' Abdul Malik (PAS), Cikgu Ismail Yusof dan Ustaz Zulkefli Ibrahim (PKR).

Saya masih ingat TSHZ berkata, “ Saya tak ada ruang sama sekali untuk menyampaikan hasrat tersebut kepada Tuanku Raja Muda, kerana seolah-olah jalan tertutup bagi saya disebabkan kini ada “orang lain” yang telah mengambil tempat saya duduk di sebelah tempat duduk Raja Muda. Dahulu sayalah orang yang boleh duduk di sebelah tempat duduk Raja Muda di dalam kereta baginda. TSHZ kata “orang” tersebut sangat tidak mesra dengan saya sehingga semasa sambutan Jubli Perak Duli Tuanku Sultan baru-baru ini pun, “orang” itu tidak bersalam dengan saya.” Nama “orang” berkenaan, beliau sebutkan kepada kami. Saya hanya boleh “quote” kan sebagai DSAZ sahaja. (Dalam pertemuan malam itu, kami tidak sebut langsung tentang hendak mengadap Tuanku Sultan)

Bersabit dengan kenyataan TSHZ bahawa Tuanku Sultan akan menanyakan, “… apa hal? Awak masuk parti mana?” Tidakkah TSHZ terfikir yang beliau sebok-sebok bersama UMNO ketika keputusan PRU 8 Mac 2008 dahulu yang Tuanku Sultan boleh bertanya seperti itu? Jelaslah beliau berfikiran tidak konsisten kerana pendirian politik beliau yang bias. (penjelasan ini tidak disiar oleh MM)


MM: Apa pandangan ustaz mengenai kenyataan TSHZ bahawa beliau dilantik sebagai EXCO tapi hanya berperanan sebagai penasihat sahaja kepada kerajaan, bahkan jika boleh mengundi pun, keputusan pasti memihak kepada orang bukan melayu kerana menurut beliau ada 8 EXCO Cina dalam kerajaan Pakatan Rakyat.

AA: Kenyataan beliau itu boleh mengelirukan. Oleh itu prlu saya membetulkan faktanya iaitu TSHZ adalah dilantik sebagai mufti bukan sebagai seorang EXCO dalam kerajaan sejak kerajaan UMNO/BN lagi. Cuma jawatan mufti itu diberi taraf sebagai EXCO iaitu Mufti Perak, siapa pun yang menjawat jawatan itu mendapat kemudahan-kemudahan seperti yang diperolehi oleh EXCO misalnya kenderaan, elaun rumah dan sebagainya. Bahkan Mufti tidak merupakan seorang pegawai ex-officio dalam Majlis Mesyuarat Kerajaan Negeri seperti Setiausaha Kerajaan Negeri, Pegawai Kewangan Negeri dan Penasihat Undang-undang. Mengenai undi yang beliau mengatakan ianya akan memihak kepada orang bukan melayu kerana adanya 8 orang Cina dalam EXCO kerajaan Pakatan Rakyat, itu tidak benar kerana jumlah EXCO dari kaum Cina hanya ada 6 orang, bukan 8 seperti yang didakwa beliau. Tambahan pula sebarang keputusan penting yang dibuat dalam mesyuarat MMK terlebih dahulu ianya dibincang dan diputuskan bersama dalam Mesyuarat Majlis Penyelarasan antara ketiga-tiga parti dalam Pakatan Rakyat, yang keputusannya dibuat tidak secara undi tetapi secara syura atau konsensus. (penjelasan ini tidak disiar oleh MM)


Seterusnya, ikutilah temubual saya seperti yang disiarkan dalam MM keluaran Ogos 2009 yang diolah tulisannya oleh Editor MM, Saudara Zulkafly Baharuddin dalam susunan yang tidak begitu kemas.

…“Hakikatnya, cerita yang sebenar ialah beliau (TSHZ) tidak pernah bertemu dengan saya ketika isu pembentukan kerajaan baru negeri Perak. Dia hanya menelefon saya ketika dia berada di Kelantan selepas men¬emui Dato’ Nik Aziz. Presiden Pas, Dato’ Seri Abdul Hadi Awang juga tidak pernah menghubungi beliau kerana Dato’ Abdul Hadi sendiri tidak mempunyai nombor telefon dia, sebaliknya Tan Sri sendiri yang menghubungi Dato’ Abdul Hadi, ” kata Ustaz Ahmad kepada Milenia Mus¬lim baru-baru ini dalam usahanya untuk menjelaskan keadaan sebenar.

MM: Tetapi mengapa ustaz menolak usaha tersebut?

AA: Bukankah selama ini, Tan Sri ke hulu ke hilir khasnya ke se¬bahagian besar masjid di seluruh negeri Perak menceritakan angkara 50 tahun kita merdeka, kerajaan yang sedia ada ini berkuasa maka ramai orang Melayu Islam yang murtad. Tan Sri sendiri kata mempunyai hubungan yang paling rapat dengan Perdana Menteri (PM) Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi sehingga boleh telefon secara peribadi, mufti-mufti sendiri boleh berdialog dengan PM, buat memorandum kepada Majlis Raja-Raja mengenai isu murtad ini na¬mun akhirnya Tan Sri sendiri mengakui, semuanya tidak boleh diharap.

Sebab itu, Dewan Ulama PAS pernah datang ke pejabat mufti untuk menyatakan sokongan. Adakah Tan Sri hari ini hendak kami berpakat dengan mereka walau mereka semua Melayu? Ini hujah Tan Sri sendiri. Jadi atas alasan itu saya menolak usaha tersebut.

Walau Tan Sri mempersoal Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham dan Ngo Kor Ming ini adalah orang kafir yang anti Islam. Saya jawab ia di dalam pengetahuan saya. Saya ke¬nal mereka berdua bukan baru, sudah 10 tahun. Saya tahu dia beragama Kristian walaupun namanya adalah Cina.

Tetapi hari ini, DAP inilah yang men¬gajak kami walau dahulu kelihatan dia yang memusuhi PAS dan Islam. Kami beri syarat jika mahu bekerjasama maka jawa¬tan MB hendaklah di kalangan Melayu Islam sebagaimana tuntutan perlem¬bagaan negeri dan mereka terima.
Sebenarnya selama ini pemimpin Melayu sendiri sebelum ini yang menzalimi Islam. Saya pernah bekerja sebagai pegawai kera¬jaan dalam bidang dakwah, saya tahulah. Walau mereka DAP orang kafir, kita cuba dan kami boleh bekerjasama atas dasar parti dan kerajaan campuran.
Jika kemudian hari mereka menyeleweng dari persefahaman ini, bila-bila kita boleh tinggalkan bukan ada perjanjian pun.

Saya tidak boleh menerima dia kata Dato’ Abdul Hadi beri lampu hijau dan Dato’ Nik Aziz setuju dengan UMNO. Kerana sebelum pilihanraya bermati-mat¬ian UMNO dan BN yang diketuai oleh Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak dan menan¬tu PM, Khairi Jamaluddin bergilir hari turun ke Kelantan untuk hancurkan kera¬jaan Kelantan yang dipimpin oleh Dato’ Nik Aziz.?

Logikkah esok hari, Dato’ Nik Aziz boleh berubah pendirian bersetuju ber¬pakat dengan UMNO? Sedangkan saya mengetahui pendirian Dato’ Nik Aziz sangat sensitif terhadap UMNO sehingga terbaru dalam isu kerajaan perpaduan seolah nampak percanggah antara musyi-dul am dan presiden sebagaimana yang dilaporkan oleh media. Orang yang sep¬erti ini, hendak kata dia boleh merelakan memberikan lampu hijau.

Padahal pada malam 8 Mac 2008, Datuk Husam Musa telefon dari Kota Bharu menyokong usul kami untuk berpegang pada ‘tahaluf siyasiy’ iaitu berfungsi dengan PR, hak demokrasi dan keadilan adalah hak kita untuk ber¬pegang bersama.

Hari esoknya Dato’ Nik Aziz hubungi bersetuju hatta kalau PAS tidak menjadi MB, kita akan teruskan bersama PR. Sampai kepada satu tahap DAP negeri juga sanggup keluar dari DAP pusat jika diminta untuk berbuat demikian. Malah dua hari kemudian, presiden parti meng-hubungi saya, “Ustaz perlu pastikan ia diteruskan, jangan pedulikan orang lain”.

Benar saya tidak bersetuju dengan UMNO untuk membentuk kerajaan negeri tetapi bukan sebab peribadi saya tetapi sebab dasar parti kerana kami telah membuat keputusan di peringkat negeri. Sudah ada ‘tahalluf siyasiy’ yang dilu¬luskan dari Majlis Syura.

Presiden dan musyidul am turut mengesahkan tindakan kami ini. Malah kami juga diperingatkan tentang kisah Perjanjian Hudaibiyah antara Rasulullah s.a.w dengan kaum musyirikin Mekah, walau ada terma-terma perjanjian berat memihak kepada golongan musyirikin tetapi Rasulullah s.a.w menerimanya un¬tuk strategi dakwah dengan lebih luas lagi dalam suasana damai.
Jadi saya ambil pengajaran ibarat jika bentuk kerajaan bersama PR. Biar dapat jadi exco asalkan boleh dekat dengan DAP un¬tuk berdakwah dan kerja-kerja Islam.

MM: Tidakkah ustaz melihat cadan¬gan UMNO untuk beri jawatan MB dan Exco kepada PAS untuk tubuh kerajaan adalah satu kelebihan ke¬pada PAS?
AA: Zahirnya begitu. Tetapi kita ada pengalaman bergabung dengan UMNO pada 1971 selepas kejadian 13 Mei 1969. Tun Abdul Razak menjadi PM dan mengajak PAS duduk bersama untuk menjaga kepentingan Melayu Islam. Jadi PAS masuk semata-mata hendak bekerja untuk Melayu Islam. Tetapi apa yang ter¬jadi kemudian?

Apabila UMNO telah mendapat kekua¬tan semula, maka PAS ditendang keluar. Makanya pengalaman pahit ini PAS tid¬ak boleh lupa sehingga PAS kalah teruk dalam PRU 1978 dengan hanya tinggal dua kerusi parlimen.

hmmm i thought i wasn't spoonfed all the way through my 11 years of school. Maybe it's because i went to a 'kampung' school. But please don't suggest anything that will radically change our education system only to have it reversed 5-6 years later by succeeding leaders. I pity our children.

which makes me think that, since our children will be exposed to internet and such (a fast medium of communication to gather mass data/tutorial), maybe our education system should focus on ethics and problem solving scenario rather than just A+B = X.

As an example, the emergence of Facebook which was created by a person at the age of 24, signalling that most of their teens (age 12-20) have already mastered atleast one programming language at the early age. At the age of 24 you have already giving people jobs not finding jobs.

I think this should be our objectives to shape our education system. Therefore our education system must be redirect to support creative talents.... Read more

One aspect that we can think of is that the education system provide a platform and tools to get information, not by shoving information. This must be done in the early years of schooling.

I was told that in the UK, they started student centred teaching/learning since the nineties, which means among others, homework is not central to learning, students learn mostly on their own but guided by the teachers. Here, even at preschool level, if teachers do not give homework, parents complaint ... Read morestraight away. When kumon gives repetative homework, parents are willing to pay circa RM250/mth, just for that planned rote learning/exercising (not thinking) - the same questions being asked different ways or different times or different question numbers.

Read moreparents, because kids nowadays are not even as smart as their elder siblings... i work in a video post where among my responsibilities is to recommend to the company any potential interns for a permanent post. in the past 4 years, i have only recommend one. one out of 17. and these people have diplomas and degrees. the one i recommended has neither. he may not be as creative, he may not be as savvy but he knows how to think and solve problems as they come without waiting for instructions. i have to only guide him whereas his peers i have to teach them. in my line of work, ability to think on their feet is a bigger asset.

I think not being able to think for ourselves originates earlier than our education system as has been discussed by your respectful contributors. Its to do with our culture ... Asian meantality.
As a child, we are not encouraged to express any free thoughts, opinions, needs or wants etc as these are deemed as being too forward, un acceptable by ... Read morecustoms etc or not having enough 'haya'' etc. Our own culture dictates how we can and cant behave or think !!!!
As we grow into adulthood, this set upbringing and mentality became dominant in our whole make up or personality and this also influences the way of our thinking, expresses ideas, behaviour and the way we approach problems whether it be from personal/social perspectives or work, education, creativities etc etc. Our natural flow of thoughts (3qal) are being suppressed from a very young age - our 'adab' is be quiet cos this is the norm. If we are not allowed to express our thoughts - then why bother to 'THINK' at all ???????

NO ... I disagree with this presumption - not if we can from now change our own perceptions! We need to be more positive n think of strategies in order to change our own 'presumed' destiny!
When I was being trained as a teacher, they've encouraged me to think of methods of deliverance of knowledge through usage of technologies such as IT, role ... Read moreplays, visits, etc etc. But at the time I also with all these new innovative ways of teaching, there must be a system of 'real' learning as well. One is not complete without the other... this is my personal thinking. Do u know that the standards of Maths/English in UK are really low - you need only to visit the primary public schools here.
So take heart. But surely we need to change our mentality and let our children have more space to think for themselves!
Train the teachers to allow more innovations etc in schools, change their methodologies of teaching methods etc. But do keep the traditions of homework, good teachers' skills intact.

The philosophy underlying University Education: " The University teaches you that for every problem there's a solution...and the University teaches and train you how to find the solution". Unfortunately our local Uni generally be an extension of secondary school education... spoon-fed much of the way, if not all... very little thinking needed, and with the Uni's overly concerned on graduating numbers, lowering of grades has been the norms.... starting right from UPSR level!

The word "Meritocracy" was coined in 1958 by Michael Young and used in title of his book, "The Rise of the Meritocracy." (Etimology Dictionary, it is a contemporary mix of latin and greek original words). Michael Young wrote an article to The Guardian against the misuse of the concept, which was unsuccessful of course: HE MEANT IT AS A SATIRE!

May 13th 1969 – The Correct View (part 1)

 

It has been 40 years since the bloody riots of 1969. Today, I would like to offer my prayers to the people that had lost their lives in that fateful day. Many have talked about what had happened. Many books were published. Many theses and opinions were written to elaborate and discuss the events prior, during and after the incident.

Some say that this bloody blotch in our history books should be a lesson learned. Some say we should bury this ghost of our past. Some even made the effort to distort history by misrepresenting the facts.

Three weeks ago, the Regent of Perak put to task people who write destructive political books in order to satisfy their own selfish agenda. His Majesty had commented on something that is very crucial in highlighting the despicable act of rewriting our history to fit a certain ulterior motive. What more, all the so-called facts presented in the books are highly presumptuous, misguided and intended only to achieve a divisive propaganda.

One such book that I would like to highlight is the book by Dr Kua Kia Soong entitled : Declassified Documents on the Malaysian Riots of 1969″.

From reading the book, readers will ultimately come to three conclusions:

1) Tun Abdul Razak masterminded the May 13 racial riots as a form of coup d’etat from Tunku Abdul Rahman

2) Datuk Harun Idris led Umno Youths to spontaneously launched an unprovoked attack towards the chinese people

3) The racial riots were not the fault of the racist opposition or the subversive communist movement

These are the conclusions the author of the said book would like his readers to believe. He strengthened his thesis by providing several dockets of ‘declassified documents’ in his book.

Now, from the term ‘declassified document’, what does a layman normally associate it with?

It must have been a top secret document sanctioned by the government to be kept as classified and confidential from the eyes of the public. It must have been documents with  valid and unshakable truths that are so damning,  it would have been prudent to be kept as a secret. Correct?

But as you read the book, these ‘declassified documents’ were nothing more than articles taken from the now defunct Far Eastern Economic Review magazine. Its writer, a journalist named Bob Reece communicated directly with the FEER’s HQ in London and British High Commission.

These documents were ‘obtained’ by Kua Kia Soong from the Public Records Office in Kew Gardens, London  – and so he stated in his book.

In fact, these were the documents deemed by Kua Kia Soong as the priceless ‘declassified documents’. They have no intrinsic value and were not data laden with factual analyses  except to notify the readers that the documents were actually, only a personal opinion of a British journalist!

Kua Kia Soong rubbished all the investigative research and study of the White Paper of the NOC on what actually had happened. He relied mainly on Bob Reece’s writings and dispatches between foreign correspondents.

If he thinks that his book is a thorough research and also the definitive version of what had really happened 40 years ago, then he is gravely mistaken.

This book can safely be classified as a highly prejudice book vent on achieving a specific propaganda which is detrimental to the nation’s social harmony. Why do I say that? Please refer to the three lies conclusions above.

This article came about from what Raja Nazrin had said three weeks ago:

If this trend continues to grow, I fear that it will create an unhealthy writing culture, a writing culture which nurtures lies, a writing culture which is unethical and ready to ignore fact, and one that will have a negative influence on the development of the people’s minds.

And this article will try its best to straighten and debunk the propaganda which had been swimming within the minds of the ignorant racists.

Now in order to ascertain what really happened that day, we need to study it holistically. Kua Kia Soong had purposely left out vital events preceding May 13. I would have thought a research director with a doctorate would have been more diligent in espousing his hypothesis. One must always begin with the root cause, the trigger, the reaction and finally the aftermath. In a historical event of this magnitude, one must evaluate every event that took place in chronological order before we can decide on the conclusion. One must know the historical background of the mood of the people on that day.

Instead, he concluded them before making the research and work on it backwards. That is why the book was written in a manner which denigrated Tun Abdul Razak as a chinese killer and a usurper of Tunku Abdul Rahman. After making this conclusion, he then proceeded in cherry picking excerpts from the so-called ‘declassified’ documents (which were nothing but mere telegrams and wired news) of British field reporters to justify his conclusion.

That is a flawed approach and it does not work that way.

Let us dissect and re-address the May 13 episode as what it is and what it is not.

The first of many factual errors the author committed was in the Introduction section whereby he averred that Dato Onn revolted against the British in 1946 in order ‘to grant citizenship rights to the non-Malays’ (pg. 13 of the book).

That was a factual mistake. In 1946 which was the birth year of Umno, Dato Onn had opposed the Malayan Union because it would usurp the power of the Malay Rulers, and allow the British to rule Malaya as their colony (according to Tunku Abdul Rahman’s Political Awakening book pg. 1).

Furthermore, Dato Onn was fighting the Malayan Union because the Malays saw the jus soli (right of territory) principle in the citizenship clause for the Malayan Union as too generous because it stipulated that individuals born in Chinese-majority Singapore were included even though Singapore was excluded from the Malayan Union structure. The Malays’ worst fears seemed to be coming true; they would be reduced from a nation to a mere community, and a minority one at that; in a land which they perceived as being historically theirs.

It was the author’s intention to psychologically induce the minds of the younger generation that the first President of Umno was actually fighting for the non-Malays! Kua Kia Soong lied about this and got away with murder.

He also used the term declassified documents extensively but failed to establish validity on the facts he wanted to portray. In chapter three he stated:

“The following day, the riots continued but on a smaller scale compared to the previous day. The curfew was only lifted to allow people to buy food. This dispatch from the British High Commission (BHC) shows that the casualties were mainly chinese:

‘Violence continued throughout the night according to eye witnesses and official reports. However it was much more sporadic, more quickly contained and less widespread. Security forces were much better organized to contain and check violence. It is hoped this morning that the back of the communal rioting may be broken. Curfew is being lifted over staggered hours in various districts of the city to allow people to get food. Curfew is to be rigidly reinforced this afternoon but indications are that it will be lifted for a few hours on a daily basis for the next few days if the situation permits.’”

But readers will see that there were no numbers of deaths supplied in that particular dispatch. It did not even mention about more chinese were killed! Readers were deliberately led to believe otherwise through the opening remarks. Very misleading indeed. Yet, currently most younger generations who is reading the books think that the official tally should be much higher! All because of his lies stated in the book.

It was amusing when in the effort to absolve any blame from the racist opposition at that time, the author concluded in his second chapter that-

“the official version of the May 13 Incident puts the blame for the riots on provocation by the Opposition parties. From correspondents’ dispatches at the time, we find little evidence to support this allegation’ (pg 39).

Of course there were little evidence from them Mr Kua Kia Soong, those correspondents were parachuted to the scene just to cover the general election.  They were not here when racial tension was at sky high weeks or even years before May 13th.

Foreign journalists from Britain in the past had always gleefully wishing that Malaysia will falter. Right after our independence in 1957, the then Malaya was labeled as the ‘primary candidate for the dustbin of history’. They had always prophesied that Malaya (Malaysia) can never succeed as a nation due to its multiracial citizenry. It would be much better if Malaya had stayed under the administration of the British.

This incident was the best opportunity for them to see us go for each other’s throat so that their prophecy will be self-fulfilled. As usual, most foreign journalists all around the world came here merely a couple of days before the general elections.

And it became damaging when in order to suit this book’s agenda, Kua Kia Soong used all those suspicious correspondence and documents.

Did Kua Kia Soong take into account the prevailing feelings of the people in Malaysia during that time? He did not. His only reference of the discontent and animosity between the Malays and the Chinese contained only within one sentence in which he blamed the policies for the anxiety caused, and not the opposition’s racist approach. He stated –

“There was certainly widespread discontent among the workers, farmers, middle classes as well as urban setters. The state’s racially discriminatory policies only served to create further divisions among the people and the 1969 election results clearly reflected this growing polarisation”.

And that was all he said. Consciously, he failed to include in his book the following items which fueled the mood of the people at that time. Importantly missing was the happenings between the election day of 10th May and May 13 itself. The author somehow failed to include these facts in his book.

Background on racial tension in Malaya / Malaysia

1) To defend Malaya from Communist insurgency, the Government embarked on an effort to recruit the Chinese to join the police force. Between 1949 to 1951, the effort of the government to attract the Chinese to defend the nation against the MCP met with little success. Only 200 chinese youths volunteered. When National Service was introduced in 1950, considerable amount of Chinese and Indians sought to leave the country.

Over 10,000 chinese fled to China to avoid call-up. This further added to the resentment among the Malays and even Sir Henry Gurney commented –

“A feeling of resentment is growing among all the other communities of the apparent reluctance of the Chinese to help. These people (the Chinese) live comfortably and devote themselves wholly to making money…”

(Did I just hear RPK cough just now?)

However, I must add that there were indeed a few Chinese that stayed back and help defend the nation against the communists. Those were the brave ones. Very much unlike the opportunistic racists that we have now who would migrate overseas when times are bad and at the same time condemning Malaysia from abroad.

2) Pulau Pinang racial clash on 2nd January, 1957 resulted in 4 deaths and 48 injured. It happened on the day of celebrating Georgetown’s bestowment of a City status by the British Government. The procession was marred by a misunderstanding by the mostly chinese celebrants towards the Malay spectators. It was quickly averted from becoming a state wide riot through the quick arrival of a police party.

3) In May 1959, another Malay-Chinese racial clash happened in Pulau Pangkor. Confrontation between Malay thugs and Chinese hoodlums caused residential fire and two Malays were killed and eight were injured. The Chinese suffered one death and a couple of injured youths. Island curfew was imposed for a few days because of that racial clash.

4) In Bukit Mertajam  circa July 1964, one Malay and one Chinese were killed over a petty argument. Dozens were injured. It started when a Malay market employee was hit with a cangkul by a 15 year old Chinese vegetable vendor.  Subsequent to this, a spate of assaults cases and arson occurred in the Bukit Mertajam area as the employee tried to report the incident to the District Council. Eventually curfew was imposed to deter anymore racial clashes. The nation was rocked yet again by this incident.

5) In 1967 when the currency was devalued, the communist elements in the Labour Party initiated ‘hartal’ on the 19th November to exploit the issue using the anti-devaluation propaganda. They chose Pulau Pinang as their target because of the sensitive racial situation on the island. This is because, Penang’s racial tension was already brewing for the past 10 years (from the first racial clash 10 years before). Many Malays were brutally attacked by the Chinese members of the opposition resulted in many deaths and injuries while  several houses and vehicles were burnt. Tunku related -

“The communists however, never left us alone. If they couldn’t carry out open aggression they at least carried out intensive and extensive acts of subversion. In 1967, we had to adjust our currency to meet our financial exigency, and so we devalued very slightly our currency – so slightly that nobody noticed. But in Penang the Socialist Front, an opposition party somewhat hostile to the Alliance Government, declared a hartal (closing of shops as mark of protest or sorrow)…

So when they declared the hartal the gangsters and thugs took it upon themselves to start trouble, and attacked the harmless Malay people whom they regarded as the favoured children of the Government. In fact these Malays were ignorant shoppers who knew nothing valuation or devaluation of our currency, and they were taken completely by surprise.”

Tunku wrote that in the 1980’s. He penned his thoughts in his weekly column in The Star. This was then compiled into a book entitled Political Awakening. The excerpt above had particularly debunked yet another lie told by Kua Kia Soong that Tunku Abdul Rahman stopped blaming the communists for the crisis.

Note that on page 27 and 28, Kua Kia Soong had tried to use yet another ‘reliable’ dispatch from the BHC to divert the blame put on communists by Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tun Dr Ismail and Ghazali Shafie. But the fact is, Tunku Abdul Rahman, as mentioned above had always blamed the communists as the instigators of the riot. Just read Tunku’s and Tun Dr Ismail’s books.

Hence, we have a Malaysian author here with political leanings of the DAP, doing his utmost best to shift the blame from the communists.

I wonder why.

Moreover, he is using the flimsiest of evidence to sidetrack the blame.

Note also that the word hartal was used by the pro opposition bloggers such as Haris Ibrahim to denote his distaste of the mainstream media and the ISA. Should he even mention the word hartal in front of the older Malay generation that suffered the brunt of the unprovoked attack in 1967, he will definitely meet disapproving faces. Astonishingly, the modus operandi of the old and current opposition is eerily similar.

6) In June 1968, racial troubles broke out when 11 chinese members of the MCP and 2 Malays who were sentenced to death for helping Soekarno to invade Johor during the Confrontation, were about to be sentenced to death for treason in Kuala Lumpur.   The MP for Batu, Dr Tan Chee Koon of the Labour Party made an appeal against the execution. He gathered enough support from the chinese and pro-communist elements instigated the chinese community further.

Outside the gates of Pudu Jail and all along the road leading to the prison, menacing crowds gathered by the thousands in unruly demonstrations, throwing stones and bottles at passing cars and blocking traffic in the busy city roads.

Fearing nationwide unrest, Tunku Abdul Rahman pleaded for clemency from the Sultans of Johor and Perak and the death sentence was commuted from death sentences to life imprisonment.

In hindsight, the net result was not unexpected. The racist communists saw it as a weakness from the government instead of seeing its magnanimity and they further destabilised the nation through their racialised approach.

Dr Mahathir at that time summarised Tunku’s decision in a stinging letter sent to the then premier in the aftermath of 13th May. He wrote, among other things:

“You yourself told me that you have prevented a riot by commuting the death sentence of the 11 subversive Chinese. In truth this very action sparked the riots of 13 May, which resulted in the deaths of many, many more.

Your ‘give and take’ policy gives the Chinese everything they ask for. The climax was the commuting of the death sentence, which made the majority of the Malays angry. The Chinese on the other hand regarded you and the Alliance government as cowards and weaklings who could be pushed around.

That was why the Chinese and the Indians behaved outrageously toward the Malays on 12th May. If you had been spit in the face, called dirty names and shown obscene gestures and private parts, then you could understand how the Malays felt. The Malays whom you thought would never rebel went berserk, and they hate you for giving too much face.

Dr Mahathir was sacked from being an Umno and Supreme Council member about a month later.

7) A much more vile attack by the opposition happened on 24th April, 1969; just two weeks before the historic general election. An Umno worker named Kassim Bin Omar was brutally murdered by the Chinese members of the Labour Party on his way home from elections campaign. He was beaten up and murdered on the streets and red paint was smeared all over his face. It was a deliberate act of murder and the senseless killing sent shock waves in the government. The opposition had become political murderers. They had tasted blood and the racists among them wanted more. They freely killed a Malay without any qualms whatsoever just to show their political strengths. Racial tension intensified to a dangerous level and a serious clash was averted at the last moment when Umno leaders instructed their supporters to bury the dead man quickly and quietly in a dignified manner. Umno leaders then were very sensitive with the feelings of the public and some say too tolerant towards the Chinese chauvinists.

Kua Kia Soong purposely did not mention this story because he wanted to put forth his third conclusion.

The Run-up to General Election of 1969

Kua Kia Soong’s analyses in his book only started from this point onwards although he still missed out several more pertinent points.

The May 13th general election had an unprecedented long campaign period. One month to be precise. Under the pretext of freedom of speech yet with rising racial tension in the background it was an unfortunate decision to be made by the government to grant a long campaigning period at that time.

The communist infested Labour Party instigated the nation by announcing in October 1968 they will boycott the 1969 general election. This left the opposition front to consist only the DAP, Gerakan, PPP and the PMIP (Pan Malaysian Islamic Party or PAS). The supporters of Labour Party then threw their weights in support of the DAP and Gerakan during the campaigning period.

They sense the government had already weakened by the racial intimidation and tension ignited by them and they were willing to divide the nation further in their campaigning strategy.

Using Kua Kia Soong’s own words -

“Thus, on the eve of the 1969 general election we saw on the one hand, PMIP (PAS) accusing UMNO of having ‘sold out’ the Malays to the Chinese and betrayed Islam; on the other, DAP accusing MCA of having “sold out” non-Malay rights to Umno” (pg 32).

So which is which? Their line of reasoning was indeed preposterous and illogical.

But this modus operandi remains the same till this day. They slandered the government through this racist method of divide and conquer and yet, they have the gall to call the Alliance (now Barisan Nasional) as racist!

Both PAS and DAP had different idealogies and yet they were willing to cooperate using DIFFERENT approach in their campaigns and the unassuming public bought their sickening propaganda! The result?

Again Kua Kia Soong’s succinctly summarized that “among the Chinese, the Alliance Party’s policy was seen as excessively favoring the Malays, while among the Malays, the Alliance Party’s policies were regarded as not getting results fast enough” (pg 37).

But who pounded these beliefs into the hearts and minds of both Malays and chinese? It’s non other than the opposition themselves.

Hence we have the ultimate hypocrisy of PAS chastising Umno for working with MCA instead of pursuing Hudud but at the same time can work in tandem with the DAP in a coalition. DAP meanwhile criticise MCA and Gerakan for kow-towing with Umno but the party itself failed to look in the mirror whenever they fawn over and hug PAS leaders in the opposition coalition.

Please re-read what Kia Kua Soong had wrote in the two excerpts above and juxtapose them with the current cries of racism that the opposition love to scream about these days.

Anyway, six days before the 1969 elections, 3 police constables came across a group of youths from the Labour Party painting anti-election slogans on the road. When challenged by the police, they attacked using iron rods and hurling firewood and stones. They put up such a fight that the police had to open fire in self defense. One of the youth was wounded and died later  in the hospital.

The opposition took advantage of the youth’s death and wanted to organise a large funeral procession on the polling day itself! See the intended malice? Did Umno leaders organised a similar procession when Encik Kassim Bin Omar was killed as shown above? Compare the two incidents and we know who were the racist among them.

Anyway, the police together with the permission from the Home Ministry however, gave the permit for the procession to be held on the 9th instead.

This funeral procession, although larger in scale compared to the recent suspected car thief’s funeral procession was the tipping point of the Malays’ anger towards the chinese.

One of the documents which were considered ‘declassified’ was Bob Reece’s article in FEER in May 1969. Kua Kia Soong used an excerpt from it to establish that the funeral procession was very disciplined and well behaved (thus trying very hard to absolve any wrongdoing of the opposition).

“While it was true that some Mao-slogans and flags were seen during this parade, the discipline of the 14,000-strong crowd in their eight-mile march may have been due to genuine restraint rather than to communist organization.” (pg 27)

There you go. A British journalist who probably forgot to bring his glasses that day. The only side that had genuine restraint were the Malays watching the ruthless and taunting procession.

For eight miles the chauvinistic chinese marched.

The sight of the jeering hooligans marching slowly around the city for that many miles must have been an agonizing experience to bear for the Malays then. And yet, they chose to be patient.

They chanted Maoist slogans, sang ‘The East is Red’, and displayed portraits of Mao Tse-tung and the Red flag. The procession passed through the heart of Kuala Lumpur and tied up traffic in almost every major street in the city and provoked Malay bystanders with shouts of ‘Malai si!’ (Death to the Malays) and ‘Hutang darah bayar darah’ (Blood debt will be repaid with blood).

Did Kua Kia Soong mention any of these in his book? Of course he didn’t. Even to show these pictures will be damaging to his third conclusion stated at the beginning of this article.

4 days after this funeral procession, when  an election victory march was held all over the city again, it broke the ever tolerant Malay psyche. That was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Today, Farish Noor wrote an article about May 13 and I am very disappointed that he chose to ignore all the above facts and proceeded to write that May 13 WAS NOT the result of a racial conflict. That is not the truth.

My next article will continue to discuss the events that happened after the victory procession of the opposition for the 2 days before May 13.

I will also lay out the retaliation by the Malays that ran amok on May 13, Umno’s role at that time and the reconciliation  process between the people. We will also discuss whether the first two conclusions of the book were correct.

I reiterate the purpose of this article – which is to straighten out the lies some people are telling to young Malaysians. In order to clear the path for a united Malaysia, history must be made known as it is. Only then we can tell straight to each other’s face – ‘how lucky we are now’.

There is hope though. Anas Zubedy’s article here is a refreshing read and I applaud it. But only after we really know what happened in the past that we can face the future in a positive way. Maybe starting next year, we can all celebrate National Harmony Day on May 13 each year.

I hope he can maintain a straight face when answering especially when Dollah Kok Lanas is going to be one of the speakers.

Sekarang musim penentuan siapa dapat biasiswa, siapa dapat pinjaman, dan siapa tidak dapat apa-apa.  Banyak golongan menghenyak JPA atas alasan tidak memberi biasiswa kepada yang dapat banyak A dan sebaliknya diberi kepada yang dapat kurang A.  Sama ada ini agenda politik atau agenda kaum, itu bukan persoalan saya di sini. 

Muhyiddin buat kenyataan seperti dalam keterpaksaan. Katanya Kementerian Pelajaran mungkin mengkaji untuk menghadkan subjek yang diambil dalam SPM.  Katanya adalah tidak adil dibandingkan kerana pelajar Sekolah Berasrama Penuh memang tidak dibenarkan ambil lebih daripada 10 atau 11 subjek, bagaimana nak lawan mereka yang dapat 14 A atau lebih daripada itu.  Pelik juga.  Kalau nak betulkan hal pemberian biasiswa, kenapa perlu hadkan pengambilan subjek dalam SPM? 

JPA dihenyak atas nama meritokrasi.  Meritokrasi, kalau ikut Webster's Dictionary ertinya: "an intellectual elite based on intellectual achievement" atau "a system in which such an elite achieves special status, as in positions of leadership". Ertinya meritocracy hanya mementingkan "intellect", tetapi tidak mementingkan sifat dan kemampuan kemasyarakatan, kepintaran emosi dan lain-lain.

Mahukah kita dibayangi oleh golongan yang hanya bijak akademik, tetapi buta kemasyarakatan, kering emosi, dan tuli kepada budaya? Sesebuah negara memerlukan lebih daripada golongan intellect. Seorang CEO syarikat yang ambil cuma lulusan kelas satu untuk syarikatnya pernah mengadu kepada saya, bahawa pekerjanya mudah break down under pressure, dan berbagai masalah yang asasnya adalah kekurangan keyakinan diri, self esteem, ketahanan mental. Mereka bijak dan rajin tetapi boleh 'jam'kan syarikat bila masa kritikal. Tetapi yang kelakarnya, CEO tu cuma third class holder masa degree dia . . . .

Saya tidak memperkecilkan kemampuan intellect.  Tetapi negara perlukan pasukan pemimpin dan rakyat yang seimbang.  Kajian rata-rata telah membuktikan bahawa kemampuan intelek hanya menyumbang sebanyak lebih kurang 15% sahaja dalam kejayaan hidup seseorang insan.  Paling utama ialah kekuatan dan kepintaran emosi.  Sekiranya biasiswa hanya mengambilkira meritokrasi, saya percaya negara tidak akan seimbang dalam perancangan untuk masa depan.

Meritokrasi yang hanya berasaskan SPM adalah perkara yang boleh mengalih pandangan daripada kemampuan sebenar generasi muda negara.  Ramai pelajar yang tidak cemerlang sewaktu SPM yang kemudiannya menjadi lebih cemerlang daripada rakan mereka yang cemerlang sewaktu SPM (MCE).  Kalau saya mahu ambil contoh rakan sebaya saya sendiri, mereka yang jadi jutawan dan banyak membantu orang lain adalah daripada golongan yang pernah dikata oleh Pengetua sebagai "tidak jadi orang".  Mereka tidak cemerlang dalam SPM.  Dan tidak ada daripada 20 pelajar terbaik SPM dari rakan sebaya saya itu yang lebih baik ekonomi mereka daripada pelajar-pelajar tidak cemerlang ini.  Malah, daripada kalangan kami yang sudah menjadi pembantu kuat pemimpin negara, tidak daripada kalangan 20 pelajar terbaik masa itu.  SPM bukan segalanya.  Sebahagian mengasah minda intelek, sebahagian yang lain meleburkan diri dalam pembentukan kepintaran emosi.  Daripada kedua-dua kumpulan ini ada yang berjaya, dan ada yang gagal. 

Seperkara lagi ialah, meritokrasi berasaskan SPM semata-mata adalah tidak adil kerana secara umumnya mereka yang berjaya selalunya terdiri daripada golongan yang mampu mendapatkan khidmat pengajaran yang lebih dan suasana belajar yang lebih baik.  Bagaimana pula dengan mereka yang tidak berpeluang mendapat khidmat sedemikian kerana kemiskinan atau tinggal jauh di luar bandar?  Kerajaan perlu mengambilkira faktor ini secara serius, kerana telah terbukti, ramai golongan berjaya dalam negara kita adalah asalnya daripada kampung dan miskin tetapi telah diberi peluang oleh kerajaan.  Bayangkan jika peluang mereka ditutup kerana meritokrasi!

Meritokrasi bukan keadilan.  Meritokrasi hanyalah salah satu daripada alat pengukuran untuk membina 1Malaysia.
